Since May 2025, an Astor Parent, Julia Narhi, has been organizing the "Feeding Astor" program, to replace the Portland Backpack program, a program which provided food sacks with kid friendly food for the weekends. Due to rising food prices and funding that can't keep up with inflation, the Backpack program paused its partnership with Astor, with uncertainty around when it will resume. Julia Narhi, generously stepped in to organize this program for our school, to keep supporting our families experiencing food insecurity.
Additionally,Julia Narhi is now working with the Astor Social Worker, Ms. Theresa, to address food insecurity during this time of uncertainty for government assistance. Contributions go directly to purchase food for Astor families in need.
A note from Julia: "If families want to add one or two of these items (https://www.portlandbackpack.org/packing-list) to their next Costco trip that could help us out a ton. Anyone who does that can just email me and I will do a pickup. I’d also love it if people could share the flyer/info with as many people as possible to get the word out."
